History
Intent
We teach History because it gives pupils the opportunity to reflect on and learn from the past. It teaches pupils where they have come from and therefore who they are. Learning from the past informs the future.
How can children begin to understand society today without understanding who created it? The events and people that shaped who we are today are incredibly important. History gives us the opportunity to study how daily life has changed over the years and what goes into fostering that change. It gives us a sense of identity and can have a huge impact on our future. It is a giant story of joy and struggle and leads to you, your family and the world around you.
To help children understand the past and how it links to the present, books, videos, photographs, artefacts, adults talking about their past, and written stories are used. Our children are taught about the every day lives of men, women and children at different levels of society. Through a careful study of periods of history they develop a sense of chronology.
