Pupil Premium Funding

Pupil Premium Funding

The pupil premium grant is additional funding for publicly funded schools in England. It’s a school-level grant that gives schools extra resources to help them meet challenges, including those arising from deprivation.

It’s allocated for schools to:

  • improve the academic outcomes of disadvantaged pupils of all abilities
  • close the attainment gap between disadvantaged pupils and their peers across the country

You can find further information about the pupil premium in Pupil Premium Frequently Asked Questions (PDF, 174KB, 8 pages) .

What is the Pupil Premium?

The pupil premium provides additional funding on top of the main funding a school receives. It is targeted at pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds to ensure they benefit from the same opportunities as students from less deprived families.

The pupil premium is allocated using the following criteria:

  • Pupils who, at any point in the past 6 years, have been accepted for Free School Meals based on family income.
  • Pupils who have been continuously looked after by the local authority for the past six months or who have been adopted from care or who have left care under a Special Guardianship or Residence order
  • Pupils whose parent/parents are currently serving in the armed forces or who are in receipt of the a pension from the MOD.

The school is accountable for how this money is spent and the impact it is making on those children who are eligible.

How many pupils at Mill Hill Primary School are eligible for the Pupil Premium?

Currently 58% of pupils at Mill Hill Primary School are eligible for the Pupil Premium.

How will the impact of Pupil Premium be measured?

The impact of pupil premium is included in the performance table for schools.  In school the progress and attainment of pupil progress children is monitored and tracked each half term when children undertake their assertive mentoring assessments.  This enables the school to identify the needs of these children and provide support and appropriate intervention.

What are the principles for the spending of Pupil Premium at Mill Hill Primary School?

  • To ensure that teaching and learning opportunities meet the needs of all of the pupils
  • To ensure that appropriate provision is made for pupils who belong to vulnerable groups, this includes ensuring that the needs of socially disadvantaged pupils are adequately assessed and addressed
  • In making provision for socially disadvantaged pupils, we recognise that not all pupils who receive free school meals will be socially disadvantaged
  • We also recognise that not all pupils who are socially disadvantaged are registered or qualify for free school meals. We reserve the right to allocate the Pupil Premium funding to support any pupil or groups of pupils the school has legitimately identified as being socially disadvantaged.
  • Pupil premium funding will be allocated following a needs analysis which will identify priority classes, groups or individuals. Limited funding and resources means that not all children receiving free school meals will be in receipt of pupil premium interventions at one time
